Sedation Dentistry
For some, going to the dentist for any kind of procedure can be scary and anxiety-ridden. Even when no invasive procedure is being done, it’s possible for some parts of an exam to be uncomfortable, making the experience less than enjoyable. For those with anxiety, just the idea of going to the dentist can put them off, making them procrastinate and preventing them from getting the care they need.
At NKC Dental in North Kansas City and Westwood, we want to help. We are happy to offer sedation dentistry to help patients who need a little extra support during appointments. Sedation dentistry is an excellent way to help you relax during your appointment, and it can be beneficial for those who have fear, anxiety, or discomfort.
What Is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry is a form of dentistry that uses medications to help patients relax when they’re in the office for their dental appointments. There are many different kinds of medications that can be used to soothe patients and help them relax.
Nitrous-Oxide Sedation (Laughing Gas)
Nitrous-oxide sedation is used because it works as both an anesthetic and pain reliever. It is made to help reduce anxiety and wears off quickly.
Nu-Calm
Nu-Calm is an FDA-approved system designed to help your body and mind relax without medications. It is a neuroscience technology that helps lower stress.
Oral Sedation
Oral sedation is another option for many patients. Medications such as Xanax or Ativan can reduce anxiety, and most people can go back to their normal activities (including driving a car) within 24 hours.
Who Benefits From Sedation Dentistry?
Anyone who has anxiety, pain, or fear associated with their health or dental problems may benefit from sedation dentistry. Patients with phobias involving dental treatments do well with sedation dentistry, as it allows regular cleanings, fillings, and other procedures to take place without unnecessary anxiety.
Another type of patient who may benefit from sedation dentistry might include those going through very long procedures, which can be tiresome for someone who is completely awake or aware. For instance, a root canal can take an hour or longer in some cases, so having some sedation on board can make the procedure go much more quickly and reduce pain as well.
Those who have low pain thresholds may also want to talk to our team about sedation dentistry.
It is possible to manage pain with IV medications as well as with options such as nitrous oxide. And, for those who are very fearful of pain, using a stronger medication, such as propofol, could help the team get the procedure done and ensure the patient is asleep or unaware, numb and comfortable.
One other type of person who may appreciate at least some sedation is a person with a strong gag reflex. Since dentists have to use many tools and devices when they check the teeth, add fillings, or work on other procedures, having sedation can be a good way to calm down that reflex and make the dentist’s job just a little bit easier. And, most importantly, you’ll feel better as the work is done, too.
Finally, don’t forget that sedation dentistry can be a good option for small children. It is common for children to be scared of going to the dentist, but when those fears get out of hand, even a simple cleaning or exam can be difficult to complete. Simple sedation with light nitrous oxide or other approved medications could help children have easier exams and reduce their fear of the dentist at the same time.
How Do I Know If Sedation Dentistry Is Right for Me?
If you have a fear of the dentist or are worried about a long or painful procedure, sedation dentistry is something that you can ask for. It is typically very safe, and some medications wear off nearly immediately following the end of a procedure.
In some cases, you will need to bring a driver with you if you choose to have sedation. Certain medications, such as propofol, are not safe to drive on for 24 hours following your procedure.
