LASER DENTISTRY
Laser Gum Surgery
Lasers are used regularly in dental care for many reasons, including laser gum surgery. Whether you want to prevent gum disease or improve your smile, a laser is the best alternative to traditional, invasive surgeries.
Early stages of periodontal disease is called gingivitis. If left untreated, it can worsen into periodontitis which causes the gums to pull away from the teeth, forming spaces called “pockets”. This can lead to infection, and eventually tooth loss.
The Procedure
Laser gum surgery is the latest and most advanced method available to combat periodontitis. First, the dentist will measure the depth of your periodontal pockets using a special tool. Then, the dentist will position the laser's fiber-optic tip at the top of the pocket. The laser will destroy infected tissue and kill any bacteria below the gum line. The dentist will use an ultrasonic cleaning tool to remove any tartar and calculus that has formed below the gum line. The laser is then used to remove any remaining bacteria and to help the blood to seal around the now clean pocket. This prevents new germs from entering space, and helps the body heal faster.
Laser gum surgery is gentle, requiring no stitches and minimal downtime
